How To Calculate How Many Tiles You Need For Your Roof!

Tired of not knowing how many tiles your roof need? Well, we at Roofing Megastore are here to help; with this rough guide, designed to help you calculate how many tiles your roof needs.

The first thing you need to do is find to find these three measurements:

  • Cover Width of your chosen tile (we'll call this (X) for this example)
  • Batten Gauge of your chosen tile (we'll call this (Y) for this example)
  • And the Pitch of your roof (which will be 25° for this example)
  • This Technical Data can all be found at the bottom of every product page on our website, underneath Technical Data.

Let's get started with an example below.

The two pictures above show a gable ended roof 10m (A) in Length, 5m (B) Wide, with a Pitch of 25°, and a Rafter Length of 2.585m (C) (If you don’t know your rafter length use our rafter length calculator here.) Since we now know all of these measurements, follow this sum to calculate how many tiles you’ll need.

  • 1. A ÷ X = D (Number of Tiles Needed for One Row Across the width)
  • 2. C ÷ Y = E (Number of Rows Needed)
  • 3. D x E = F (Total Number of Tiles Needed for One Side of the Roof)
  • 4. F x 2 = Total Number of Tiles Needed (We Times by Two to Get the Total Number of Tiles Needed for Both Sides of your Roof)

  • Here’s an alternative format to help you fully understand the sum, using Britmet Slate 2000

  • 1. 10m ÷ 1.250m = 8 (Number of Tiles Needed for One Row)
  • 2. 2.585m ÷ 0.369m = 8 (Number of Rows Needed, Always Round this Number Up)
  • 3. 8 x 8 = 64 (Total Number of Tiles Needed for One Side of the Roof)
  • 4. 64 x 2 = 128 (We Times by Two to Get the Total Number of Tiles Needed for Both Sides of your Roof)

  • And presto, you’re done. You’re now one step closer to becoming a professional roofer.

Now that you’ve mastered the art of calculating how many roofing tiles you need it’s time to move on with episode 2 of “Becoming a Roofing Expert” that’s exclusive to our brilliant customers at Roofing Megastore!
