The Cost of Roofing Materials – Metal Roofing Tiles

Metal roofing tiles are cost effective, durable and long lasting. They are frequently chosen as roofing for out-buildings such as sheds and garages or agricultural buildings. However, with a multitude of technological advances some of the more recent designs are beginning to be used more and more on conservatories and homes.

With metal tiles now available in various designs and colours, some even replicating concrete, clay and slate tiles, they are ideal for use on a conservatory or outbuilding when you want to match the roof to the roof of the main building or home.

Metal tiles are generally larger than some other types of tiles and often come in sheets which look like and that cover the equivalent area of 6 or more tiles but are actually only one. This makes installation speedy and simple. And, often the addition of a metal roof onto an outbuilding can be carried out by a keen DIYer.

As metal tiles are up to 40% lighter than some other tiles this makes them perfect for structures that may not be strong enough to support heavier roofing materials. They’re also great for a lower pitched roof as they can be used on pitches as low as 10°.

There’s a wide range of different metal roof tiles available and they're one of the cheaper roofing materials that you can purchase although their prices are dependent on their brand and style.

We’ve looked at a number of different metal tiles across the price scale so that you can get an idea of what you can get for your budget:

Luxury:

Britmet - Plaintile Plus - Lightweight Metal Roof Tile

The Britmet Plaintile Plus is available in 6 natural shades and has a beautiful granular finish which buffers any noise from rain or hail which can be a downfall of many other metal roofing sheets. It resembles the look of a row of tiles, and, because of this, it is quick and easy to install using a dry fix process. A favourite for industrial and business buildings alike and also popular on chalets and park homes.

Britmet Plaintile Plus can be used on virtually any roof as it's suitable for roof pitches from 15° to 90° and they come with a 40 year warranty. These metal roof tiles require little maintenance and are even resilient against a fair level of footfall and can protect against vandalism. They’re available in two different thicknesses of 0.45mm or 0.9mm and are a wonderful all rounder which more than justify their extra cost.

Budget:

With a 40 year guarantee but expected lifespan of up to 60 years this light metal roofing sheet may be cheap but it’s also perfect for outbuildings, sheds, carports, tool sheds, summer houses and more. Ideal for roof pitches as low as 5° and right up to 90° it’s an incredibly versatile product.

Giving you the ability to install a roof extremely quickly, it’s a great DIY option as the sheets can be overlapped at the top or side without having to be bent or cut. You will only need a power screwdriver to install these sheets and they can be installed either straight onto a solid nail-able surface or be fixed to tile battens.

Made from a 0.7mm thick steel and coated with a smooth finish, this sheet is incredibly strong and resilient to footfall. Its overall finish gives the impression of traditional pantiles and it’s resistant to corrosive atmospheric conditions. All in all a fantastic budget option that’s well worth considering.
