Frequently Asked Questions

What is Plywood?

Plywood is a common construction material which consists of multiple thinner sheets of wood. These sheets are often referred to as "piles" and are glued together. To maximise the impact resistance of the boards, the grains of each sheet should be rotated up to 90 degrees from one another.

Whilst plywood is popular amongst tradesman for construction applications, it is also often used in furniture making. This is again due to it being one of the strongest timber supplies available.

What Are Plywood Sheets Used For?

Ply can be used on a wide selection of projects. This includes large construction and small DIY projects. Although, you will need to ensure you have the appropriate quality and thickness of plywood for your application.

The most common use cases include wall panelling, flooring, framing and joinery. However, plywood sheets can be used in virtually any other application too. This includes structural and non-structural applications throughout the home - both interior and exterior.

How Strong Are Plywood Boards?

Plywood is undoubtedly one of the strongest building materials. However, the strength of ply can be dependent upon the exact wood that has been used. This is as whilst Malaysian wood produces strong timber, cheaper Chinese wood does not.

When selecting your plywood it is therefore important to consider its application and which regions of wood is best suited. Whilst Chinese plywood may be ideal for non-structural cladding, it is not typically suitable for load-bearing projects.

For such projects you will require Indonesian or Malaysian ply. Whilst this can be considerably more expensive, it is ideal for applications where the sheets will need to hold significiant weight and handle significant impact.

You will also need to consider the thickness of your plywood sheets. This is as ply is available in a selection of thicknesses between 3mm and 25mm. The thicker sheets naturally provide greater strength, but your timber merchant will be able to recommend the necessary thickness for your project.
