What are the Benefits of Clay Roof Tiles?

What are the Benefits of Clay Roof Tiles?

Advantages

The biggest advantage of clay tiles and one of the main reasons that they are chosen, is for their appealing look. You can find clay tiles in a variety of shades that will give a gloriously traditional look and feel to a home regardless of whether it’s a new build or a renovation project. An experienced roofer can also mix and match a few shades of clay tile on a roof to get a brilliant heritage feel (see the Marley Canterbury tile for example – available in three interchangeable shades).

But aside from their aesthetically pleasing exterior they also offer incredible longevity. They’re made from an amazingly durable natural material and a clay roof tile will stand the test of time and withstand high wind speeds and torrential downpours. To this day clay tiles from thousands of years ago are still found in archaeology sites which is a true test of their endurance!
And clay tiles are often still processed in the same way as they were way back then so you know that if you’re putting up a clay roof tile it will be strong, sturdy and require little maintenance.

Their colour also ages brilliantly, tending only to get better with age and they're a brilliant choice for a heritage site, often chosen by building regulators in order to maintain a traditional look of a period home.

You’ll find that there is a wide variety of styles available of clay tiles and thanks to their often interlocking capabilities clay tiles are also easy to install. Another wonderful advantage is that they offer great insulative properties which will help to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter because of the way that air is able to circulate underneath them.

Plus, because clay tiles are produced from a natural material, they’re eco-friendly. No harmful gases are created during their production and their thermal mass helps to decrease energy dependence. They can also be recycled into new tiles or bricks if a roof is no longer required.

Disadvantages

However, clay tiles do have some disadvantages; if you need to get up onto the roof to check the guttering or the chimney, for example, tiles can be fragile underfoot and can crack if you walk over them. It is relatively easy to replace or fix a cracked clay roof tile however you will of course need to be careful where you stand whilst carrying out the fix to avoid damaging any more tiles.

The other main disadvantage is the weight of clay roof tiles which can impact installation time and ease of installation, it can also mean that they are not suitable for all roof types.

Popular Clay Tiles

But if like us, you think that their benefits far outweigh their disadvantages have a look at our pick of the most popular clay tiles for sale at Roofing Megastore:

Marley Canterbury Clay Tiles – This is a stunning example that comes in three shades, the three shades can be used together for a magnificent historical look and when used as one colour individually they will add a truly traditional feel to any building.

Sandtoft Arcadia Clay Tiles – These tiles will provide your roof with the charm and character of an aged tile from day one. They have been designed to resemble reclaimed tiles – providing a stunning roof and are brilliant for use on complete roofs or used to match an already aged roof on a renovation project.
