Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Lean-to / Pent Roof?

A lean-to is a single-slopped roof often used for small to medium sized shelters. Unlike a traditional apex roof, a lean-to roof requires few fittings and a minimal structure. This makes it considerably cheaper to construct than other structures.

Whilst a lean-to or pent roof is easy to construct, you are somewhat limited on the materials you can use. This is particularly if it is a timber structure with little support for heavy roofing materials, such as concrete or clay tiles. For this reason you will want to use lightweight alternatives to traditional roofing.

What is the Minimum Pitch of a Lean-to Roof?

When building a pent roof, you will typically want a pitch of 12 degrees or more. This will allow you to use a variety of different materials, such as synthetic roof tiles and shingles.

Pitch is the angle of your roof. If a roof's angle is too low, water will not be able to run off and capillary action may occur. This could lead to bowing or, in some circumstances, leaks from occurring.
